🍂 Tips for Your Autumn & Winter Garden

Autumn is the perfect time to prepare your garden for winter and get a head start on next spring.

🍁 Autumn Garden Tips

1. Clean up spent plants – Remove dead or diseased plants and fallen leaves. Healthy plant material can go into your compost.

2. Plant cool-season vegetables – Try kale, spinach, lettuce, carrots, radishes, broccoli, and garlic.

3. Add compost – Spread 1–2 inches of finished compost over your garden beds to improve the soil.

4. Plant spring bulbs – Fall is a great time for tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and other spring flowers.

5. Mulch around perennials – Add about 2–4 inches of mulch after the ground begins to cool.

❄️ Preparing for Winter

• Protect tender plants with frost cloth or plant covers.

• Bring potted tender plants indoors before hard freezes.

• Keep newly planted trees and shrubs watered until the ground freezes.

• Don’t cut back every perennial—some provide winter shelter and food for wildlife.

• Protect young plants from rabbits and other animals with appropriate barriers.

🌱 Plan for Spring

Fall is also a great time to:

• Test your soil.

• Add compost or organic matter.

• Make notes about what worked and what didn’t.
